Gospel singer Pastor Donnie McClurkin was born on November 9, 1959 in Copiague, New York to Donald McClurkin, Sr. and Frances McClurkin. After a difficult childhood, McClurkin found his refuge in church and learned to sing. In 1989, McClurkin moved to Detroit, Michigan where he became an associate minister at Perfecting Church under the leadership of Marvin L. Winans. McClurkin founded the New York Restoration Choir, recording an album with the group in 1991. After signing with Warner Alliance, McClurkin released his first self-titled solo album in 1996, which gospel singer and mentor Andrae Crouch helped to produce. His second album, Live in London and More, was #1 on the U.S. Gospel Chart for more than forty weeks after its release in 2000.

Winans ordained McClurkin as a pastor in 2001 and sent him out to establish Perfecting Faith Church in Freeport, New York, where he remains as Senior Pastor. Though the church initially started as a meeting in the Hempstead, New York Quality Inn, it gained its own building in 2000.  Beginning in 2002, the church and McClurkin hosted “Church Without Walls,” which sought to unite churches in various denominations in the area by having members and people of the community worship in locations open to everyone. His weekly radio program, The Donnie McClurkin Show, debuted in 2006, and is now broadcast in over 75 markets. McClurkin has appeared as a judge on five seasons of BET’s Sunday Best, from 2010 to 2015.

In 2001, McClurkin published Eternal Victim, Eternal Victor about his emergence from the struggles of his youth. He shared the same story three years later with the release of the biographical documentary From Darkness to Light: The Donnie McClurkin Story. The Word Network began airing his weekly television program Perfecting Your Faith in 2009.

McClurkin’s discography includes Again (2003), Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs (2004), We Are All One (Live in Detroit) (2008), Duets (2014), and The Journey (Live) (2016). He has frequently collaborated with gospel singers Kirk Franklin and Yolanda Adams, and has won numerous awards for his music, including three Grammy Awards.

Pastor Donnie McClurkin was interviewed by The HistoryMakers on October 6, 2016 and October 8, 2016.
