Glossary
| Fitzgerald, Ella | | The First Lady of Jazz, Ella Fitzgerald was born in 1918, and performed for the first time at the age of fifteen at the Apollo Theater. Fitzgerald, who had rudimentary musical education, quickly built a reputation among musicians and singers for her clarity of tone, her rhythmic perfection and a range that ran from somber lows to tinkling highs. By 1955 Fitzgerald was working with Cole Porter and Duke Ellington. During the course of her career, she was awarded ten Grammy Awards. After a struggle with diabetes and heart surgery, Fitzgerald died in 1996. |
