| DuBois, W.E.B. | | Scholar, social scientist and political activist W(illiam) E(dward) B(urghardt) DuBois served as director of research for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and editor of its influential magazine, “The Crisis”. His famous book, The Souls of Black Folk, examined the dualistic nature of the African American experience and strategies to combat oppression. The critique polarized the philosophical positions of Black intellectuals between Booker T. Washington’s conservative strategy and DuBois’ more ‘radical’ framework. He left the United States for Ghana under allegations that he was an agent working for foreign governments. DuBois died in 1963. |
