She later returned to Chicago State University to earn an M.A. in English in 1978.
Campbell began her career at Malcolm X, where she was the assistant dean of student support services from 1974 to 1977, and then went on to be an instructor of English and communications until 1982. Under her leadership, Malcolm X has received a number of awards for teaching and learning, including the 1997 Award for Excellence in Workforce Preparation from the Illinois Community College Board. Campbell has also negotiated with local businesses and organizations for increased funding for scholarships.
