Scientist and educator Walter Massey balances the responsibilities of trained scientist and university administrator with remarkable skill. Beginning his education in his hometown of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Massey completed high school at sixteen, at which time he began undergraduate studies. Born on April 5, 1938, to Chester and Essie Massey, he went on to complete the highest levels of education, earning a B.S. from Morehouse College in 1958 and later his M.S and Ph.D. degrees in physics at Washington University in 1966.
Diversity and distinction aptly characterize Massey's career. In 1995, Massey returned to Morehouse College, where he serves as the college's president. One of many hallmarks in a long career in higher education, Massey has also held physics professorships at numerous universities, including the University of Illinois, Brown University and the University of Chicago. In 1993, he was appointed provost and vice president for academic affairs for the University of California system, where he served until he assumed the presidency at Morehouse College in 1995.
Along with distinguishing himself as an educator, Massey has had a longstanding relationship with Argonne National Laboratory, where he served as vice president for research between 1984 and 1991, and as the founding chairman of the University of Chicago Development Corporation between 1986 and 1991. In 1991, he was appointed director of the National Science Foundation, where he served until 1993. His career illuminates a commitment to diversity and expanding opportunities for minorities in the sciences.
In recognition of his many accomplishments, Massey has been awarded more than twenty honorary doctorates and numerous awards for excellence in teaching. In addition, Massey is active in several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Massey maintains a commitment to service through his affiliation with a number of civic, cultural and community organizations. He is married to Shirley Anne Massey and is the father of two sons, Keith and Eric.
