An Evening With annual celebrity interview event is The HistoryMakers' hallmark program. The intimate format of the interview, conducted before a live audience and taped for airing on PBS-TV, explores the fascinating lives of some of Americas most beloved public figures. In 2000, we nationally launched The HistoryMakers with a program entitled, An Evening with Harry Belafonte, where Harry Belafonte was interviewed by his friend and actor/humanitarian, Danny Glover. The HistoryMakers produced An Evening with Dionne Warwick in 2001 and the legendary actress Diahann Carroll interviewed Ms. Warwick. In 2002, An Evening with Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, featured the lives of these "National Treasures" in an interview with their friend, well-known educator and activist, Angela Davis. In 2004, The HistoryMakers presented An Evening With B.B. King being interviewed by fellow musician Isaac Hayes. Over 1000 people attended each event and all three have aired as PBS specials to much acclaim. Last year, An Evening With Della Reese marked the first time this event was held outside of Chicago, as singer, actress and minister Della Reese spoke about her life to fellow actress Lorraine Toussaint in Atlanta, Georgia. An Evening With Russell Simmons was a spectacular success as The HistoryMakers' celebrated our fifth anniversary. This year, in 2005, The HistoryMakers have conducted two An Evening With... programs. The first, An Evening With Diahann Carroll marked the first time The HistoryMakers brought our signature program to Washington, D.C. In July, we were proud to return for a second year to Atlanta for An Evening With Nikki Giovanni. Now, we're back in Chicago, presenting An Evening With Denyce Graves, where opera singer Denyce Graves will be interviewed by Oscar-nominated actress Angela Bassett!

In 1999 WQXR Radio in New York named her as one of classical music's "Standard Bearers for the 21st Century." Denyce Graves provides many benefit performances for various causes special to her throughout each season
