Taped live in Chicago, Illinois at Northwestern University’s Thorne Auditorium on Saturday, October 22, 2005, this program is the ninth in The HistoryMakers’ An Evening with. . . series. Academy Award nominated actress Angela Bassett interviewed her friend Denyce Graves with Discover Financial Services LLC serving as the event’s title sponsor.

Denyce Graves
Recognized worldwide as one of today's most exciting vocal stars, Denyce Graves continues to gather unparalleled acclaim in performances on four continents. Her career has taken her to great opera houses and concert halls. The combination of her rich vocalism, stage presence and exciting theatrical abilities allows her to pursue a wide breadth of operatic portrayals as well as delight audiences. Denyce Graves has become particularly well-known for her portrayals of the title roles in Carmen and Samson et Dalila. These signature roles have brought Ms. Graves to the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna Staatsoper, Royal Opera - Covent Garden, Opera National de Paris, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opernhaus Zurich, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, and the Festival Maggio Musicale in Florence.
One of the music world's most sought-after recitalists, she is an exclusive recording artist with BMG Classics, and appears often on television. She was named one of the "50 Leaders of Tomorrow" by Ebony Magazine and was one of Glamour Magazine's 1997 "Women of the Year." In 1999 WQXR Radio in New York named her as one of classical music's "Standard Bearers for the 21st Century." Denyce Graves provides many benefit performances for various causes special to her throughout each season
Angela Bassett
Angela Bassett, one of the entertainment industry's premier leading ladies, is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama. Her memorable roles include How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Ruby's Bucket of Blood, and The Score. Bassett is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Tina Turner in the biopic What's Love Got To Do With It, for which she earned the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.
