An Evening with Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee

This hour-long interview provides a unique glimpse into the lives of actors and “National Treasures” Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. Taped in Chicago in front of a live audience, the couple was interviewed by activist and scholar Angela Davis. Using footage taken throughout their lives, An Evening With Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee transports the audience into the lives of these two stars.

Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee

At the time of the taping Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee had been married for over fifty years.  They were known for their activism.  With dozens of credits between the two of them, they watched their careers grow, only to be blacklisted by Broadway and come back again stronger than ever. Throughout their careers, they supported Martin Luther King, Jr., eulogized Malcolm X, traveled throughout Africa and hosted their own T.V. specials while continuing their successful film careers.  Ossie Davis passed away on February 4, 2005.

An Evening With Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee provides a fascinating inside look into the lives and careers of these two legends.

This program was taped as part of the fall fundraiser for The HistoryMakers, a 501(c)(3) Illinois, not-for-profit corporation. The HistoryMakers is committed to the development of a unique on-line archive of 5,000 first-person narratives of African American HistoryMakers, both well known and unsung. When completed, the archive will represent the largest single one of its kind in the world.
