WVON: The Good Ol’ Days of 60s Radio

On February 19, 2002, The HistoryMakers played host to a free public event entitled WVON: The Good Ol’ Days of 60s Radio. Legendary disc jockeys Lucky Cordell, Cecil Hale, Herb Kent, “The Cool Gent,” Richard Pegue and Pervis Spann took part in a lively dialogue as they discussed their days at WVON radio. These distinct radio personalities showcased the talent of black musicians and community-based news, helping to make WVON a Chicago institution.

WVON: The Good Ol’ Days of 60s Radio was presented in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and the Museum of Broadcast Communications. The moderator for the ceremony was WVON’s Clifford Kelley.

WVON: The Good Ol’ Days of 60s Radio was developed by The HistoryMakers, a Chicago-based organization founded in 1999 that is committed to preserving, developing and providing easy access to an internationally recognized, archival collection of thousands of African American video oral histories. The goal of The HistoryMakers is to develop a digital video archive that is entirely searchable by image and text of 5,000 well-known and unsung African American HistoryMakers.
