Arkansas Disenfranchises Blacks
Arkansas passes legislation which disenfranchises free blacks from voting.

May 25, 1836

House of Representatives Passes "Gag-Rule" on Anti-Slavery Laws
The United States House of Representatives passes a "gag-rule," which prohibits them from taking any action on anti-slavery legislation. This continues each successive year with stricter rules governing it until 1844. The "gag-rule" is overturned in 1845.

July 12, 1836

Cincinnati Mob Wrecks Abolitionist Newspaper, The Philanthopist
A Cincinnati mob wrecked the abolitionist newspapaer, The Philanthropist on this date. The paper was founded and published by James G. Birney.

August 31, 1836

Henry Blair Receives Another Patent
Inventor Henry Blair patented his cotton planter on this date.
