Earvin "Magic" Johnson Born
NBA All-Star Earvin1991"> "Magic" Johnson was born on this date in Lansing, Michigan. Johnson led his Michigan State University's basketball team to a National Championship in 1979. He went on to become a 5-time NBA Champion with the Los Angeles Lakers. His team's style of play with speed and fastbreaks became known as "Showtime". Johnson had to retire from the NBA due to contracting the HIV virus in 1991. He played on the famous U.S. Olympic "Dream Team" in 1992 and came back to play for one more season with the Lakers in 1995-96. He was inducted into Basketball's Hall of Fame in 2002. He now holds a minority share in the ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers and has opened several business opportunities in inner city communities around the U.S.
