Dr. Rebecca Cole Born
Dr. Rebecca Cole, who became the second Black female physician in America, was born on this date in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Cole served as a sanitary visitor or traveling physician to visit families in their homes in slum neighborhoods and instruct them on hygiene and infant care. She practiced medicine for fifty years.

First Black Poetry Anthology Printed
Les Cenellies, the first Black poetry anthology appeared in print.

April 16, 1846

Dred Scott Files Suit
Slave Dred Scott files a petition in court for his freedom on this day. His claim is based upon having lived as a slave within the borders of a fre state for seven years.
