Historian Carter G. Woodson received his doctorate from Harvard University on this date. Dr. Woodson is known as the "Father of Black History". He came up with the idea for Negro History Week, which was expanded into an entire month years later.

Only Black Perishes on the Titanic
Joseph Phillippe Lemercier Laroche was the only Black to perish on the Titanic on this date. He made sure that his wife and two daughters made it to a lifeboat. Laroche and his family were on their way to Haiti from France. His uncle was the President of Haiti.
