First Officially Recognized Black Nurse
Fannie Elliott becomes the first African American nurse to be recognized by the American Red Cross. Her official Red Cross nurse's pin bears the stamp "1A," which designates her as "colored." The Red Cross continues this practice until after World War II.

U.S. Navy Mess attendant Doris "Dorie" Miller was born on this date in Waco, Texas. Miller was a part of the crew on the U.S.S. West Virginia when the Japanese attacked it at Pearl Harbor. Miller heroically risked his life the help his fellow wounded sailors. He also manned one of the ship's guns during the attack.
