Audrey Grevious Born
Social activist Audrey Grevious is born in Lexington, Kentucky.

Housewives' League of Detroit Founded
Fannie B. Peck founds the Housewives' League of Detroit. The organization is committed to supporting the black business community, and within four years, membership has grown to 10,000.

1930

Larsen Wins Guggenheim Award
Nella Larsen, author of Passing and Quicksand, is awarded a Guggenheim Foundation award for creative writing, the first African American to receive such an award. With the funds from the award, she travelled to Europe, but despair over her divorce returned her to New York City where she worked quietly as a nurse for the next thirty years. She passed away in 1964.

First African American to Perform in Major Opera
Caterina Jarboro becomes the first African American to perform with a major opera company when she sings in the title role of Aida at the Puccini Opera House in Milan, Italy. She will go on to be the first African American to perform in Aida in the United States in 1933.

Following the death of Justice Edward T. Sanford, President Herbert Hoover nominates John J. Parker, a known racist, to the Supreme Court. The NAACP leads a successful campaign to prevent him from being confirmed by the United States Senate. In his stead Justice Owen J. Roberts is confirmed.

Nation of Islam Formed
W.D. Fard announces the founding of the Temple of Islam, later to become Temple Number 1 of the Nation of Islam, in Detroit, Michigan. The religious sect incorporates Koranic teachings, Christianity, black nationalism and Fard's own beliefs. Fard later left Michigan following a series of arrests for "cult activities."
